Why Cerakote outlasts factory finishes

Factory finishes — nitride, Tenifer, Melonite, blackening — are surface treatments that diffuse into the steel. They're durable, but they're bound to one or two color options and they wear off over decades of holster draws.

Cerakote is a polymer-ceramic composite that bonds molecularly to the steel during cure. It's rated for 500°F continuous service, sees 0% chemical attack from solvents and CLPs, and clears the ASTM B117 salt-spray standard at over 1000 hours without rust formation. The finish thickness is roughly 0.001 inch — well inside all manufacturer tolerances for slide-to-frame fit.

For a carry gun, that means your finish looks the same after 10,000 rounds as it did the day it left our shop. For a competition gun, it means you can color-code your build to your team. For a safe queen, it means you can pick literally any color in the rainbow.

Cerakote refinishing — frequently asked questions

What's actually included in the free one-color Cerakote?
Any solid color from our standard Cerakote H-Series catalog — Graphite Black, Sniper Grey, Burnt Bronze, Tungsten, FDE, Magpul OD, Patriot Brown, Crimson, Stormtrooper White, and 60+ others. The slide is fully prepped, bead-blasted, masked, and sprayed in your chosen color. The interior of the optic cut is left raw to maintain optic-mating contact. Curing is 2 hours at 250°F per Cerakote spec.
How do I get a custom color that's not in the standard list?
Pick the +$35 custom color option in the order form and tell us what you want — give us a name, a brand reference (e.g. 'Krylon Camouflage Khaki'), or a hex code. We'll match it from Cerakote's expanded H-Series and C-Series palettes (450+ colors available beyond the standard list). If we can't get an exact match we'll send you the closest 2–3 options before applying anything.
What's a multi-color or camo job?
Anything that requires multiple coats and masking — two-tone splits, MultiCam-style camo, sponging, distressed/worn finishes, battle-worn looks, hex camo, splatter, drip patterns. The +$100 upcharge covers the additional masking time and second/third color application. Provide a reference image when ordering and we'll match it.
Why is Cerakote better than the factory nitride finish?
Factory nitride is durable but limited to gunmetal grey/black. Cerakote bonds at the molecular level to the steel and outperforms nitride on chemical resistance, abrasion resistance, and corrosion resistance. The Cerakote H-Series specifically is rated to 500°F continuous service, 0% chemical attack from solvents and CLPs, and Salt-Spray ASTM B117 over 1000 hours without rust. It's also color-stable: the finish doesn't fade in sunlight or yellow over time.
Will Cerakote affect slide-to-frame fit?
No. We mask the slide rails before spraying so the contact surfaces remain bare metal. Slide-to-frame fit is identical to factory after coating. The finish thickness is approximately 0.001" (one mil) on coated surfaces — well within all manufacturer tolerances.
Can I get just Cerakote without an optic cut?
Cerakote is currently a value-add we include with optic cut orders rather than a standalone service. If you want refinishing only, contact us — we can quote it case-by-case depending on the slide and color complexity.
